Tammy Kovar

Tammy graduated from the University of South Carolina and pursued post-graduate studies at Portland State and Oregon State Universities. She interned with the US Soil Conservation Service and worked in San Francisco as a Biologist for Monsanto. Tammy was recruited by industry-leader Mycogen, and relocated to Florida. She continued her career with Plant Health Care, a Pittsburgh based bio-technical company.

Since 2004, Tammy has been owner of Biological Tree Services, a science-based, specialty tree and landscape service business. BTS has doubled its revenues annually since inception, and services clients from Palmetto to Naples and is garnering worldwide recognition. In 2008, to complement the service-based BTS company, Tammy launched Sustainable Landscape Supply (SLS) to further support the Green Industry nationwide. SLS distributes a unique proprietary line of biologically-based fertilizer and pesticide products sold through its Sarasota, FL retail store and which can also be purchased online (www.sustainablelandscapesupply.com).

Tammy is a dedicated plant biologist, a Certified Arborist and licensed Pest Control Operator. She serves on the Sarasota County Water Efficient Landscaping Regulations Task Force. She was recently elected Treasurer of the Florida Chapter of the ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) and is the Florida Liaison of the Tree Research and Education Endowment Fund. In 2008 she raised $3,500 for The Tree Research and Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund) by bicycling from Indianapolis to St. Louis, a distance of 500 miles. Locally she volunteers on the Beautification Committee of the Board of Directors of Keep Manatee Beautiful. Tammy also contributes to Living Out East magazine with monthly articles to educate homeowners in Manatee and Sarasota Counties.

In addition, Tammy offers consulting services tailored to specific landscape issues on an international basis through her parent company, Think Global LLC.

At the state level, in 2009, BTS was awarded the Sustainable Florida "Small Business Best Practice Award" at the Sustainable Florida 11th Annual ceremony in Orlando. Locally, in September, the Sarasota County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) awarded Tammy the 2009 Hall of Fame "Entrepreneurship" Award and also named her a finalist for the "Green-to-Gold" category. In the same month, Keep Manatee Beautiful awarded BTS the "Public Service Award for Small Business and Industry Partnership".

In 2008, Tammy won the prestigious "Guy Hudson Award" by the Keep Sarasota County Beautiful Advisory Board. BTS' 2008 awards included "Small Business of the Year" from the Manatee County Chamber of Commerce, and the Frank G. Berlin, Sr. "Think Green Small Business" award from the Sarasota County Chamber of Commerce. BTS was also a finalist in the "Business of the Year" given by the Tampa Bay Business Journal and was designated "Best Green Business of the Year" by Sarasota Magazine's BIZ941 Publication.

Tammy has been invited as a guest speaker to diverse conferences such as the Florida Seed Association, International Bonsai Association, Caribbean ISA Workshop in Puerto Rico, US Watermelon Association, Tomato Institute, Symposium of the Evolution of Landscape, and the International Workshop on Microbial and Mycorrhizal Fungus in Mexico. She was formally one of the first Board members of the Pesticide Applicators Professional Association and Secretary to the Executive Board of the California Agricultural Production Consultant's Association where she was honored as Pest Control Advisor of the Year. Throughout her distinguished career in plant biotechnology and active leadership in industry associations, Tammy has remained dedicated to developing awareness of sustainability in urban landscapes, and educating on personal responsibility.
